Tutoring jobs in Australia: how to get hired in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide

6 min read · Updated October 2026

Tutoring is one of the most popular flexible jobs in Australia, and one of the most rewarding. Success Tutoring centres across Australia hire tutors and centre staff who can build real rapport with students and help them grow in confidence, not just people with top marks.

What tutoring jobs in Australia involve

At a tutoring centre you'll usually work with small groups using an established program, so your time goes into explaining ideas clearly, checking understanding and keeping students motivated. Common areas include:

  • Maths, from primary school numeracy through to senior secondary
  • English, reading and writing
  • Science
  • Preparing for NAPLAN, selective school and scholarship tests
  • Senior study support for the HSC, VCE, QCE, WACE and SACE
  • Building study habits and confidence

Do you need a qualification to tutor in Australia?

Generally, no. Teacher registration with your state or territory teacher regulator applies to teaching in schools, not to working as a tutor at a tutoring centre. Each employer sets its own requirements: many welcome university students and recent school leavers with strong results in the subjects they tutor, while senior or specialist roles may ask for a degree or teaching experience.

Always check the requirements in the job ad.

Working With Children Checks by state

Tutoring is child-related work, so you'll need the screening check for the state or territory you work in before you start. Rules, fees and exemptions differ, so always check the official website.

  • New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia: a Working With Children Check
  • Queensland: a blue card
  • Tasmania: registration to work with vulnerable people
  • Australian Capital Territory: Working with Vulnerable People registration
  • Northern Territory: an Ochre Card

Tutoring jobs for uni students in Australia

Tutoring fits well around lectures at universities like the University of Sydney, UNSW, Monash, the University of Melbourne, UQ, UWA and the University of Adelaide. Sessions usually run after school and on weekends, and the experience of explaining ideas, leading a small group and talking with parents strengthens applications for teaching, health, psychology and many other careers.

Pay and hours

Pay, hours and employment type are set by each employer and vary by role and location, and Australian employers must meet the minimum pay and conditions that apply to the role. The Fair Work Ombudsman's website explains awards and pay rates. Every Success Tutoring job ad shows its employer, employment type and, where published, the pay range, so you can compare roles before you apply.
