Tutor interview tips: how to prepare and what to expect
5 min read · Updated October 2026
A tutor interview is usually friendly and practical. The hiring team wants to know two things: can you explain ideas clearly, and will students enjoy learning with you?
Questions you might be asked
- Why do you want to be a tutor?
- Which subjects and year levels are you confident teaching?
- How would you help a student who has lost confidence?
- How would you handle a student who isn't engaged?
- Tell us about a time you explained something difficult to someone.
- What is your availability across the school term?
How to answer well
- Use real examples: coaching a junior team, helping a sibling, mentoring at school
- Talk about the student's feelings, not just the content
- Show you'd stay positive and patient when progress is slow
- Be honest about what you can and can't teach
You may be asked to explain a concept
Some interviews include a short practice explanation. Choose a clear structure: check what the student already knows, explain one idea with an example, then ask them to try one. Speaking warmly matters as much as being correct.
Questions to ask them
- What does training look like for new tutors?
- How are sessions structured?
- How do tutors share student progress with families?
- What does a typical week look like?
Before you go
Re-read the job ad, plan your route or test your video link, and bring a positive attitude. Enthusiasm is one of the things tutoring employers value most.
