How to get a tutoring job in the UK
Updated October 2026
What tutoring jobs in the UK involve
At a tutoring centre you'll usually work with small groups using an established program, so your time goes into explaining ideas clearly, checking understanding and keeping students motivated. Common areas include:
- Maths, from primary school through to GCSE and A level
- English, reading and writing
- Science
- Preparing for the 11+ and other entrance exams
- GCSE, A level, National 5 and Higher revision
- Building study habits and confidence
Do you need a qualification to tutor in the UK?
Generally, no. Qualified teacher status (QTS) in England, and teacher registration in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, apply to teaching in schools, not to working as a tutor at a tutoring centre. Each employer sets its own requirements: many welcome university students and recent school leavers with strong grades in the subjects they tutor, while senior roles may ask for a degree or teaching experience.
Always check the requirements in the job ad.
DBS and other criminal record checks
Because tutoring is work with children, expect a criminal record check before you start. Which check applies depends on where you work:
- England and Wales: a DBS check from the Disclosure and Barring Service, usually an enhanced check for work with children
- Scotland: membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme, through Disclosure Scotland
- Northern Ireland: an AccessNI check
Right to work in the UK
Employers must check that you have the right to work in the UK before you start, so you'll be asked for proof later in the process. If you're on a Student visa, there are limits on how many hours you can work during term time. GOV.UK explains the rules. Don't send passports or other identity documents with an initial application.
Tutoring jobs for uni students in the UK
Tutoring fits well around lectures at universities like UCL, King's College London, Imperial, the University of Manchester, the University of Birmingham, the University of Leeds, the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh. Sessions usually run after school and on weekends, and the experience strengthens applications for teacher training, healthcare, psychology and many other careers.
Pay and hours
Pay, hours and employment type are set by each employer and vary by role and location, and must meet the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage, which GOV.UK publishes. Every Success Tutoring job ad shows its employer, employment type and, where published, the pay range, so you can compare roles before you apply.
